Gela Guraspashvili is the author of free chess. In 1979 he asked Georgian Chess Federation to acquaint rules of chess and to express their opinion about the danger that computer represents for chess. The conclusion signed by four chess players was negative. Chess players unambiguously stated that during 100 years the chess would not run any risk.
The author called a new game ,,chess without debut“, and then – ,,free chess program“. Intellectual Games Olympiad Fathers recommended the title ,,free chess“.
Recommended by David Bronstein the claim firstly foreseeing the introduction of a king was changed (modified).
A controversial issue to put chess pieces on three or four horizontals was solved according to Nana Alexandria’s recommendation, however this issue may again cause controversies.
In spring 1991 first free chess tournament took place in which grand masters: Nona Gaphrindashvili, Nana Alexandria, Zurab Azmaipharashvili, Genadi Zaichik, Lasha Janjghava and others took part. Zurab Azmaipharashvili won the tournament with 9,5 scores.
In the tournament held in 1995 where Bukhuti Gurgenidze took also part, Lasha Janjghava won. Since then some tournaments in participation with almost all Georgian chess players took place.
Firstly International grand masters: Nana Alexandria and Lasha Janjghava expressed their support to free chess. The famous figure in chess Tengiz Giorgadze brought an invaluable contribution in promoting this game.
On 27 February 2005 at the meeting of the board of Directors of Fide the issue of free chess was heard.
